Chapter 10: Gardening Tips & Tricks
If you want your garden to prosper, you need to take care of it regularly. Many things affect the quality and the health of a garden. Understanding them is vital. For example, you need to keep weeds at bay and apply fertilizers periodically. Here are more tips that can help you keep your garden happy.
Protecting Against Pests and Insects
Your garden is sure to attract a lot of pests and insects, all hungry for a bite. As such, you need to ensure that it has enough protection against them. Here are some methods you can implement.
Fences: By surrounding your garden with a proper fence, you can protect it from damage by larger animals such as dogs and even rabbits. The size of the fence should be chosen for the kind of animals your garden is up against.
Netting: Birds can be a danger to fruits and other plants. In order to protect your garden from them, you can take the help of netting .
Soapy Water: This method works when you find aphids on the plants. First, cut off the leaves that have been consumed. Spray the rest of the leaves with soapy water to protect the plant.
Ladybugs: You can use Mother Nature to protect your garden by releasing a few ladybugs into your garden. These insects can destroy many of the pests that affect gardens.
Plants: There are quite a few plants which are capable of acting as a line of defense against pests and insects. Some of them can also make an excellent addition to the garden as well such as marigolds.
Farmers and even gardeners are trying their best to get better, larger, and earlier harvests from ancient times. Some techniques may be regarded as a mere act of mysticism while others are well-developed and commonsense approaches to farming that are now practiced in modern agriculture. These techniques might come handy for home based vegetable gardeners as well.
Cover Crops - Adding Nutrients and Stability
A cover crop is a general term that encompasses any plant that prevents erosion, maintains soil fertility, and improves soil structure. Sometimes the term ‘green manure' is intermingled with cover crops. Green manures are cover crops that are chiefly employed to supplement nutrients to the soil. They are tilled into the soil when still have green coloration. Green manures are regarded as the most valuable cover crop for vegetable gardeners .
Here are some fascinating advantages of cover crops:
• They supplement organic matter to the soil, thus, improving water retention, drainage, and aeration.
• They inhibit erosion as they hold soil in place in wet or windy regions.
• They help loosen compacted soils. For instance, bell beans and oilseed radish have aggressive taproots (roots that can grow deep into the soil), that help break up compacted soil.
• They add nutrients value to the soil. For example, legume cover crops like crimson clover form a mutualistic relationship with a bacterium on their roots to convert atmospheric nitrogen to the type they can consume. The nitrogen is released for the upcoming crop when the cover crop is tilled into the soil.
